Watch, MLC | Donovan Ferreira’s million-dollar leap accounts for dangerman Shimron Hetmyer

The adage ‘catches win matches’ has been used from the time cricket has been played and it came to the fore again during the MLC 2025 game between Texas Super Kings and Seattle Orcas. Donovan Ferreira came up with a splendid effort in the boundary to dismiss in-form batter Shimron Hetmyer.

‌Texas Super Kings continued their stay at the top of the Major League Cricket 2025 season with a resounding 51-run win against Seattle Orcas at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Lauderhill on Sunday.

TSK skipper Faf du Plessis smashed six fours and four sixes as he top-scored in the match with a 52-ball 91 to power TSK to 188/4 while Shubham Ranjane remained unbeaten on 65 off 41 balls. Pacer Adam Milne shone with the ball with an impressive spell of 5/23, including a maiden, in four overs as SEO were bowled out for 137 in the penultimate over.

In the match, Donovan Ferreira came up with a stunning effort while fielding at long-on to turn the tide in TSK’s favour. The in-form Shimron Hetmyer walked into the middle in the eighth over with the score reading 52/3 and SEO needing a further 137 runs from 74 balls.

The southpaw, who had three unbeaten half-centuries in his last four innings before this match, started aggressively hitting two fours and a six getting to 26 off just 15 balls. With Heinrich Klaasen’s dismissal made it 91/5, SEO badly needed Hetmyer to stay on to nurture any hopes of winning the contest.

With fellow countryman Akeal Hosein coming in to bowl the 14th over, Hetmyer tried to go big as he aimed to keep the already spiralling required run rate in check. He went on one knee to slog sweep a fuller and faster delivery from the left-arm spinner that pitched outside off stump.

With the batter failing to get the desired elevation, long-on fielder Ferreira was in play as he made a full-throttle jump in an attempt to catch the ball. But as it turned out, the South African timed his jump to perfection as he completed an excellent catch and landed back safely in the playing area.

Hosein was thrilled as he jumped to thump his fist in the air, running towards Ferreira and exchanging high-fives with another leap. That catch ended SEO’s faintest chance of winning the game, evident from Hetmyer’s reaction as he walked back in despair.

What a catch!
