Punjab Kings rose to second place in the Indian Premier League 2025 with a four-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Yuzvendra Chahal’s four-fer, including a hattrick, and half centuries from Shreyas Iyer and Prabhsimran Singh ensured CSK’s elimination.

‌Brief score: CSK 190/10 (19.2) [Sam Curran 88(47), Dewald Brevis 32(26); Yuzvendra Chahal 4/32(3)] lost to PBKS 194/6 (19.4) [Shreyas Iyer 72(41), Prabhsimran Singh 54(36); Khaleel Ahmed 2/28(3.4)] by four wickets.

Bowling first, the left-arm pace duo of Arshdeep Singh and Marco Jansen came up with some accurate bowling as CSK managed just eight runs in the first two overs. In a bid to fasten the scoring, opener Shaik Rasheed sent a fuller delivery over Arshdeep’s head for a four before pulling him for a maximum a ball later. However, the Indian pacer had the last laugh sending Rasheed back the very next ball as the youngster skied a mistimed hit. Jansen drew inspiration from his bowling partner to strike with the first ball of the next over as both openers were back in the hut in just the fourth over. Ravindra Jadeja joined Sam Curran in the middle as the new pair looked to end the powerplay with some cheer. The Indian all-rounder welcomed Harpreet Brar into the attack with three fours in the last over of the powerplay but nicked one to the keeper to hand the momentum back to the visitors as the score read 48/3 after six overs. With Chahal’s introduction in the next over, it was spin from both ends as Shreyas Iyer tried to press home the early advantage handed by the host. But the plan didn’t materialise as both Curran and Dewald Brevis looked comfortable against the tweakers with the left-hander sending Harpreet over long-on in the eighth over for his first six in the match. Curran continued the surge with consecutive fours off Chahal in the next over and Brevis joined in with a six in the same over as PBKS scored 32 runs from three overs of spin. That prompted Shreyas to go back to his pacers but Chennai continued to tick the scorecard with boundaries coming in at frequent intervals as the fourth-wicket partnership swelled to 78 from 49 balls. But Brevis departed for 32 in the 15th over, Azamtullah Omarzai’s last, and Curran also brought up his fifty in 30 balls in the same over as Chennai moved to 134/4 looking to go past the 200-run mark. They got the perfect launchpad as the England all-rounder blasted medium pacer Suryansh Shedge for two sixes and two fours to plunder 26 runs in the 16th over. The southpaw, however, nicked a short ball from Jansen for a well-made 88 off 47 balls to set the stage for skipper MS Dhoni and Shivam Dube to finish proceedings on a high. But, leg-spinner Chahal picked up four wickets in the penultimate over, including a hattrick, to restrict CSK to 190.

In response, Priyansh Arya started the chase in his usual aggressive style scoring three boundaries in the first two overs. Prabhsimran Singh also joined his younger partner with a four and six off Kamboj in the fourth over to take the attack to the opposition. After hitting two boundaries off short balls in Khaleel Ahmed’s third over, Priyansh got out edging another short ball to MS Dhoni as Punjab’s powerplay ended at 51/1 with a quiet over from Jadeja. With Noor Ahmad bowling a boundary-less over from the other end, the equation rose to 134 at 10.30 runs an over. However, Prabhsimran, along with skipper Shreyas, upped the scoring with three fours and a six in the next two overs as the required rate dipped to 10 per over. MS Dhoni went back to his pacers in search of that elusive wicket but Matheesha Pathirana ended up conceding 14 runs in his first over with Prabhsimran greeting the pacer with a huge six and a four, the latter bringing up his half-century in a row, off 31 balls. Though Noor dismissed Prabhsimran to break the 72-run second wicket partnership, Shreyas looked in good nick to take PBKS past the finish line. Another big over followed with the Punjab skipper punishing a slower ball from Curran for a six and then going past covers en route to his fifty as the target shrunk to 60 off 30 balls. Nehal Wadhera’s dismissal in Pathirana’s second over did not seem to affect Shreyas as he sent the Sri Lankan pacer to the cleaners with two huge sixes over long-on in a 20-run over. From then on, it was straightforward for the Kings even as Shreyas was dismissed for 72 in the penultimate over. With the loss, it was curtains for Chennai in IPL 2025 as Kings moved to second with 13 points from 10 games.
