Rohit Sharma’s innings in red-ball cricket comes to an end as the batter announces retirement from Tests
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket on Wednesday bringing an end to his 12-year stint with the national team. The Mumbai batter, who had retired from T20Is after winning the T20 World Cup last year, also announced that he will continue to play in ODIs for India.
The veteran batter, who made his Test debut with consecutive centuries in the home series against West Indies in 2013, has represented India in 67 Tests with a tally of 4301 runs at an average of 40.57, scoring 12 hundreds and 18 fifties. After starting his Test career in the middle order, Rohit made his move to the top of the order in the longer format too, scoring nine of his centuries as an opener.
The Mumbai batter was appointed as the captain of the side after Virat Kohli stepped down from captaincy after India tour of South Africa in 2021-22. He led India in 24 Tests with the team winning 12 out of those and losing nine while three of them ended in draws.
Rohit was the skipper of the Indian team that made its second consecutive final in the WTC 2021-23 cycle and he also boasts a win percentage of 50.00, only behind Kohli for captains who have led India in at least 10 Test matches.
Rohit was part of the Indian side that toured Australia in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 and also led the team in three Tests. However, he had a forgettable final tour aggregating only 31 runs from three matches at an average of 6.20 before dropping himself from the fifth and final Test at Sydney as India lost the five-match series 3-1.
