Shubman Gill followed up his Headingley heroics with a crucial ton for India against England on Day 1 at Edgbaston

India went into Stumps on Day 1 at 310/5 courtesy of a unbeaten 99-run stand between skipper Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja. The former's ton was the highlight act of the hosts' batting effort, saving them from a potential collapse following Yashasvi Jaiswal's counterattacking knock of 87.

‌Asked to bat under overcast skies, India endured a testing start as KL Rahul scratched around for 2 off 26 before chopping on to Woakes. Yashasvi Jaiswal countered with attacking strokes, and Karun Nair’s fluent arrival helped shift momentum, the pair adding quick runs until Carse dismissed Nair for 31 just before Lunch with the score 98/2.

Post the break, Jaiswal and Shubman Gill kept England at bay with a steady 68-run stand. Jaiswal, nearing another century in England, fell for 87 trying to cut Stokes. Rishabh Pant then threw away his start by holing out to long-on against Shoaib Bashir, while Nitish Reddy was bowled shouldering arms to Woakes, triggering a post-Tea mini-collapse to 210/5.

Gill, meanwhile, remained composed, finding solid support in Jadeja. Their assured running and risk-free batting frustrated England, and Gill brought up a deserved century with back-to-back boundaries. Even the second new ball failed to break the stand as India closed the day strongly with the partnership between the duo unbeaten on 99 runs.
