Lionel Messi is set to return for Inter Miami's Leagues Cup opener against Atlas on July 30 after serving a one-game MLS suspension. Coach Javier Mascherano views the enforced rest as a silver lining. Messi missed the July 26 match vs FC Cincinnati, his first break after featuring in 22 of 23 recent matches.

When the 2025 Leagues Cup begins for Inter Miami on July 30 against Mexican side Atlas at Chase Stadium, all eyes will be on Lionel Messi, who returns after serving a one-match suspension. Messi missed the club’s 0-0 draw with FC Cincinnati on July 26 due to a ban for skipping the MLS All-Star Game. However, Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano believes the enforced rest might benefit the Argentine legend, who had featured in 22 of the previous 23 matches across all competitions.

Mascherano joked about Messi’s availability but confirmed the World Cup winner will start the tournament fully fit and refreshed. The coach expects Messi’s motivation to be high as the club aims to defend its Leagues Cup title won in 2023. Rodrigo De Paul, another Argentine World Cup winner, has joined the squad but awaits visa clearance to be eligible.

Atlas, who have started their Liga MX Apertura campaign with a win, a draw, and a loss, are managed by Gonzalo Pineda, who previously coached Atlanta United. Pineda has faced Messi’s Inter Miami side thrice and understands the mental challenge of preparing players to compete against stars like Messi, Suarez, Busquets, and Alba, who also returns from suspension.
