Spain re-appoint Luis Enrique as their head coach

In a sensational turn of events, Spain have re-appointed former boss Luis Enrique as their head-coach, the BBC and Sky Sports have reported. The former Barcelona boss was first signed by the RFEF (Royal Spanish Football Federation) in July of 2018 but stepped aside in March of 2019 for personal reasons. Yet despite that, Enrique was still in-charge of Spain with Roberto Moreno, his number two, taking control and relaying instructions from the bench.

Moreno was officially appointed in June by the RFEF and confirmed La Roja’s spot at the 2020 Euros with nine consecutive wins in their European Qualifiers. However, reports from the Guardian has indicated that the 42-year-old was officially replaced by his former head-coach after Spain’s 5-0 win over Romania. This does make Enrique coach number five for Spain since June of 2018 with Julen Lopetegui, Fernando Hierro, Roberto Moreno and Enrique himself twice.

The Daily Mail further reported that Enrique didn’t want Moreno to stay on as his assistant with RFEF president Luis Rubiales making things official via a press conference and he also went on to admit that Enrique will be allowed to choose his own backroom staff.

“Today we can confirm that Luis Enrique will return to his position. Luis Enrique can choose his own staff. We have acted sincerely, we have not deceived anyone. Everyone knew that if Luis Enrique wanted to come back he had the doors open. Luis Enrique will continue to the Qatar World Cup (in 2022).”
