East Bengal has handed over a two-year extension to its coach Alejandro Menendez after a successful campaign in the ongoing I-League season. With one more game to go, the Kolkata-based club is in contention of winning the title for the first time in the history of the tournament.

East Bengal will be playing against Gokulam Kerala in Kozhikode on Saturday with an aim of winning the I-League title for the very first time. But, before that game, the management has handed over a two-year extension to the Spanish coach Menendez for a wonderful season in the league.

Currently, at the second position on the table, East Bengal will eye a win against Gokulam and would hope Chennai City to either lose or draw against Minerva Punjab FC on the same day.

“The dominating performance by the team this season guided by our Head Coach Alejandro is taking the team in the right direction,” East Bengal chairman Ajit Isaac said in a statement, reported PTI.

The 52-year-old coach expressed his happiness after the renewal of his contract with the club saying, “I believe in the new management Quess Corp, for the support and trust they have built in me and I am delighted to continue this relationship for the next two years and build Quess East Bengal FC as a world class club.”

With 12 wins out of the 19 games in the season, East Bengal have scored 39 points in the current season and are trailing Chennai City FC by just one point because of an extra defeat.
