MS Dhoni becomes second most successful ODI captain of all time

Inarguably India's best limited overs captain, MS Dhoni has taken the team to World Cup wins in both the formats – the T20 World Cup in 2007 and the ODI World cup in 2011. The skipper added another feather to his cap with India's demolition job of New Zealand at Dharamsala in the first match of the five-ODI series.

Dhoni had equaled Allan Border's record of 107 wins when the visitors had completed a 10-wicket win over Zimbabwe to win the series 0-3 at Harare. With yesterday's win, Dhoni went past the Australian legend. However, Dhoni has achieved his feat in 195 matches at a 59.78% success rate, while Border had taken only 178 matches to reach his milestone of 107.

The Indian skipper is also unlikely to surpass the record of Ricky Ponting, who no doubt was at the helm of the greatest ODI team of the modern era. Ponting had notched up 165 wins off 230 matches at an impressive win percent of 76.14%.

Only Hansie Cronje's South African that “dropped” the World Cup, and thus led to the Aussie era of the last decade, comes close to that record with a win percent of 73.7% leading to 99 wins in 138 matches. Had they won that tragic semi-final, Cronje would have hit a century and may be more.

However, it is Clive Lloyd's West Indian team of the late 70s and early 80s that lead the charts on the success margin for a long period – Lloyd boasts of a 77.71% win record in 84 matches.
