Zaheer Khan likely to replace coach Kirsten at Delhi Daredevils

In what are interesting times for the Indian Premier League, from the suspension of CSK and RR to the recent proposal of Kings XI Punjab to move out of Punjab, Delhi Daredevils joins the list of teams that are looking to revamp before IPL 2016 gets underway. Recently retired Zaheer Khan is a front-runner for the spot of coach Gary Kirsten at the Delhi outfit.

In a revamped Delhi outfit, former South African cricketer Gary Kirsten is unlikely to retain his place as head-coach, reported the Hindu. Kirsten, coach of the 2011 World cup winning Indian cricket team, has been unable to work his magic on the Delhi outfit, who have performed miserably under him. The Daredevils finished at the bottom in 2014 and last but bottom in the 2015 edition.

Trials in coaching, however, have not worked well for the team that has not tasted much success ever in the IPL– their highest finish has been limited to three semi-final appearances back in 2008, 2009 and play-off appearance in 2012. They roped in the legendary Sir Vivian Richards as batting consultant and veteran Pakistan spinner Mushtaq Ahmed as bowling coach in 2013 – to no avail.

The team seems to have finally turned to retired Indian quick Zaheer Khan to accomplish the task. Zaheer Khan, meanwhile, is looking to cap off an illustrious career with his farewell season and may well find himself in the squad as coach-cum-player. The Indian veteran quick played for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the last season of the IPL.
