Gujarat Titans beat Mumbai Indians by three wickets in a last over thriller to go on top of the IPL 2025 points table. Rahul Tewatia and Gerald Coetzee’s final over heroics helped the visitors to a crucial win while Jasprit Bumrah’s splendid spell of 2/19 and Will Jacks’ half century went in vain.

‌Brief score: MI 155/8 (20) [Will Jacks 53(35); Sai Kishore 2/34(4)] lost to GT 147/7 (19) [Shubman Gill 43(46); Jasprit Bumrah 2/19(4), Trent Boult 2/22(4)] by three wickets (DLS method).

Put into bat first, Mumbai got off to a miserable start losing in-form Ryan Rickelton in the second ball of the innings off Mohammed Siraj. Will Jacks, who walked in at three, was lucky as he got a reprieve, two balls later, in the same over with Sai Sudharsan dropping an uppish drive. The England batter rubbed salt to GT’s wounds with a boundary off the very next ball from Siraj and continued with a six and four off the pacer’s next over. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma looked rusty at the other end as he got out caught at mid-off, trying to go over the in-field off Arshad Khan. Suryakumar Yadav was quick off the blocks with back-to-back boundaries off Prasidh Krishna in the fifth over before having his fair share of luck with Sai Kishore dropping another straight forward chance. The sloppy fielding continued with Siraj putting down a sitter to hand another life to Jacks after he scored three boundaries off Arshad Khan in the last over of the powerplay as MI reached 56/2. Shubman Gill turned to spin with an attempt to break the dangerous-looking partnership but the batting duo continued comfortably notching 33 runs in the next four overs. However, the spin pair of Sai Kishore and Rashid Khan brought GT back into the match with the three wickets in the next three overs. The left-arm spinner, after giving away a six that brought Will Jacks’ fifty, prized out Surya in the 11th over before sending back Hardik Pandya in his next while Rashid took the crucial wicket of Will Jacks as the trio ended up finding fielders going for the big hits as MI were reduced to 111/5. With Tilak Varma and Naman Dhir also returning without significant contributions, the mantle fell on Corbin Bosch to take the home side past the 150-run mark. The South African all-rounder hit consecutive sixes off the first two balls off Prasidh’s final over as MI reached 155/8 in their allotted 20 overs.

The Titans’ riposte also kicked off on the wrong note with in-form opener Sudharsan nicking an outswinger from Trent Boult to Rickelton in the second over. GT skipper Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler were watchful as they negotiated the new ball spell from Boult and Jasprit Bumrah under swinging conditions to reach 29/1 at the end of the powerplay. With Pandya sticking to pace, Buttler opened up his arms with two boundaries off Deepak Chahar off the seventh over. With the captain himself bowling a marathon over, which consisted of 11 balls courtesy the wides and no-balls, GT got the much-needed momentum with a total of 29 runs coming in those two overs. But once again the home side was back in the game with a few quiet overs from Karn Sharma and Ashwani Kumar with the latter picking up the crucial wicket of Buttler as the score read 79/2 after 12 overs. But impact player Sherfane Rutherford rightly created an impact with two fours and sixes off Jacks and another six off Ashwani with rain curtailing play and GT well-ahead of the DLS par score. But just as what had happened throughout the match, Jasprit Bumrah brought MI right into the match after the restart when the equation stood at 49 from six overs. After being hit for a four in the second ball, he castled Gill with an excellent delivery that tailed in before hitting his pad and taking the timber off the fifth. He repeated the feat in his next over to disturb Shahrukh Khan’s stumps after being hit for a four. The left-arm pace duo of Boult and Ashwani took inspiration from the ace pacer to dismiss Rutherford and Rashid to make it four wickets in four overs for the host as rain once again curtailed proceedings with 24 runs required from the last two overs with four wickets remaining. With rain finally relenting, the Titans were left with a revised target of 15 from one over. Rahul Tewatia scored a four while Gerald Coetzee scored a maximum in Deepak Chahar’s final over to take Gujarat to the top of the points table with a last-ball win.
