RR vs MI | Rickleton, Rohit and Karn star as Mumbai go top of the table with big win over Rajasthan

After being put in to bat at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, Mumbai Indians openers Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickleton had a cautious start as they moved to 16 runs in three overs. The Indian opener survived a tense moment in the second over bowled by Fazalhaq Farooqi, taking a last-minute review to overturn the umpires call of an lbw. However, Rickleton shifted gears hitting the Afghan pacer and Jofra Archer for a six and a four in consecutive overs with Rohit taking his time to get into the groove. With Riyan Parag turning to Maheesh Theekshana for another over in the powerplay, Rohit freed his arms with consecutive boundaries to bring up the 50-run partnership as MI ended the powerplay at 58/0. The wicketkeeper-batter continued the surge with back-to-back fours off former MI pacer Akash Madhwal’s first over. The senior pro wasn’t to be left behind as he took on left-arm spinner Kumar Karthikeya with boundaries off the first two balls and another six by Rickleton in the same over got him to a 29-ball half-century. With a wicket still eluding RR, skipper Parag brought himself on in the 11th over as the duo completed MI’s first 100-run opening partnership in IPL this year. Rohit continued his roaring form with his third fifty in four matches in the next over but the home side finally tasted success with Theekshana castling the Protean batter in the same over. The Royals wrested back some momentum with Parag sending back the veteran opener, who holed out in the deep, in the very next over with MI reaching 123/2 after 13 overs. New batters Suryakumar Yadav and captain Hardik Pandya wasted no time as they smashed three fours off Farooqi to notch up 16 runs in the over. Theekshana wasn’t spared either with the pair hitting a four and a six in his last over, the 16th of the innings. With that six off the last ball, Surya became the player with most 25 or above scores in consecutive innings going past the mark in the last 11 matches. Archer, who was reintroduced at the death, gave away 22 runs in his final two overs and Farooqi went for 21 runs in his last over as the dashing duo hit boundaries for fun. Their unbeaten partnership of 94 of just 44 balls for the third wicket took MI to a formidable 217/2 at the end of their innings.

The Royals had a bad start as they lost Vaibhav Suryavanshi for a two-ball duck in the first over bowled by Deepak Chahar. Though Yashasvi Jaiswal tried to pull the home side out with two sixes off Trent Boult in the next over, he too didn’t last long with the left-arm pacer getting his revenge by going through the southpaw’s defence. The story continued as none of the Royals’ batters stayed in the middle for long with Nitish Rana and Riyan Parag following suit after scoring a couple of boundaries. Rana was caught in the deep while trying to pull Boult while the Royals skipper miscued a pull to be Jasprit Bumrah’s first wicket of the day. With Shimron Hetmyer departing for a golden duck, once again caught off a pull shot off Bumrah, the home team was in dire straits at 62/5 at the end of the powerplay. With Shubham Dubey getting caught in the deep off Hardik Pandya and Dhruv Jurel caught and bowled by Karn Sharma in consecutive overs, the writing was on the wall for the Royals. The host’s innings folded up for 117 runs with another pathetic batting display taking them out of the tournament as Karn finished with impressive figures of 3/23. Boult also picked up three wickets while Bumrah finished with two as MI moved to the top of the table with a clinical win.
