It is never more difficult to hold onto a cricket ball than when the stakes are high and palms are sweaty from the occasion -- hence the saying 'catches win matches'. South Africa certainly came out believing in it in the WTC Final at Lord's as a slew of exceptional catches had them seize momentum.
South Africa chose to bowl first under overcast skies at the World Test Championship Final on Wednesday and the decision did not take long to pay dividends as Kagiso Rabada removed Usman Khawaja for a duck to hand the Proteas their first breakthrough. The quick then snapped up Cameron Green just three deliveries later, making it two brilliant catches in the slip cordon to put Australia on the backfoot, before Marco Jansen removed Marnus Labuschagne to end a 30-run stand with Steve Smith. The African outfit were thus cruising as Lunch approached, a moment handcrafted for Travis Head to flip the scripts as he came out guns blazing with his usual counterattacking approach to put the pressure back on their rivals. However, another moment of magic soon after left the Men from Down Under in the doldrums and brought a dramatic end to the first session of the 'Ultimate Test'.
Jansen took the ball in hand for the 24th over of the innings, the last before umpirs flicked off the bails for a 40-minute break. The giant left-armer floated a ball outside off first up to tempt Head into a booming drive, only for the Duke's to shape away in the end to leave the batter looking sheepish. But Head has never been one to back down from his shots and when the next ball veered onto his pads, the southpaw flicked his wrists hoping for a reprieve. However, to his horror, the ball took the slightest of edges and flew behind the stumps where Kylle Verreyne took a step to his right and put in a sprawling dive to somehow clutch onto the red cherry one-handed.
Head could not believe his luck at seeing the catch being taken while the oppositionw ere ecstatic, encapsulation perfectly a riveting two hours of play to begin the summit clash
