‌Steve Smith and Cameron Green scored gritty half-centuries to take Australia to a better position against West Indies on a rain-affected third day at the National Cricket Stadium in St George’s, Grenada on Sunday. The duo rescued the Aussies from a precarious 28/3 as the visitors ended at 221/7, stretching the overall lead to 254 runs.

Starting the day at 12/2, the visitors lost night watchman Nathan Lyon in the ninth over of the day after a 33-ball vigil. However, new batter Smith and Green put their heads down to ensure that they did not lose another wicket in the morning session as the Aussies made 57 runs in 21 overs.

Green got to his fifty in 122 balls, hitting five fours, before getting dismissed in the next ball after adding 93 runs for the fourth wicket. Smith, however, continued to take the Aussies forward along with Travis Head (39) adding another 58 runs for the next wicket. The veteran batter hit seven fours and a six during his knock of 71 before being sent back by Justin Greaves just after tea.

Another rain-affected session meant Australia ended the day at 221/7 with only 58.3 overs bowled on the third day. Wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey was unbeaten at the crease with a 27-ball 26 alongside skipper Pat Cummins when stumps were called as the pair look to take Australia’s lead past the 300-run mark. For the Windies, Jayden Seales, Shamar Joseph and Greaves all picked up two wickets each with Alzarri Joseph getting one.
