AUS vs SA | Twitter unimpressed as Pretorius gifts wicket after horrendous brainfade

Batters giving up early while attempting a run is a common sight, but Lhuan-dre Pretorius took that a step further during South Africa’s second T20I against Australia. The wicketkeeper-batter was stranded after charging down the track before giving up, to gift the hosts his wicket.

‌Trailing the three-match series, South Africa showed positive intent from the word go after being put into bat by Australia in the second T20I at the Marrara Stadium in Darwin. With some entertaining cameos from the openers, the visitors reached 50/2 at the end of the six-over mark.

Both openers, however, could not extend their stay, getting out in the space of seven balls. Ryan Rickelton’s miscued pull to Tim David off Ben Dwarshuis in the fourth over brought young batter Lhuan-dre Pretorius to the middle.

The left-handed batter, who was dropped in only his fourth ball, made his intentions clear, smashing Glenn Maxwell over mid-wicket to the roof of the stadium. But the young wicketkeeper-batter could not capitalise much on his dropped chance as he too followed in the first over after the powerplay.

Pretorius charged down the track to play a big hit off Maxwell again, but the veteran off-spinner dragged his line back to catch the left-handed batter in an awkward position. He ended up inside-edging the ball as it parried straight to Alex Carey behind the wicket.

Pretorius was initially unaware of where the ball went as he kept searching for it, but he was way down and too late when he finally spotted the ball going into Carey’s hands. The southpaw did not even try getting back to his crease as he started walking back just as Carey disturbed the stumps.

Twitter was not impressed as the young batter gave up his fight too early, gifting the hosts an easy wicket.
