DC vs KKR | Twitter erupts as Narine executes a Guptill special to run out Rahul in true Dhoni fashion

Many moments in world cricket have parallels in the IPL, and MS Dhoni’s run out in the 2019 semi-final is one of them. A similar incident occurred in a match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals, where KL Rahul was run out in almost the same way, thanks to Sunil Narine’s accurate throw.

ā€ŒIn response to Kolkata Knight Riders' 204/9, Delhi Capitals had a rough start, with KKR debutant Anukul Roy dismissing Abishek Porel in the first over. Faf du Plessis and Karun Nair then put together a brisk 39-run stand, taking the score to 39/1 in four overs, but Vaibhav Arora struck in the fifth over to remove Nair. Soon after, KL Rahul was involved in a mix-up with Faf du Plessis and was run out.

On the third ball of the seventh over, Anukul Roy bowled a length delivery around leg stump, with the batter backing away to make room. The veteran Proteas batsman stepped down the track and flicked it to short fine leg, where Sunil Narine quickly got to the ball and fired a direct hit at the striker's end. The replay showed KL Rahul was just short of the crease, and the square leg umpire referred it to the third umpire. The big screen then flashed ā€˜out,’ and Rahul walked back to the pavilion, shaking his head. Twitter quickly compared the run out to MS Dhoni's unfortunate dismissal in the 2019 World Cup semi-final, with fans noting the similarity to Martin Guptill’s throw.
