Sourav Ganguly : Kumble and Kohli haven’t been tested yet
Sourav Ganguly feels that Virat Kohli’s biggest test as a captain lies ahead when the Indian team tours abroad. Ganguly also feels that despite India’s convincing win in the second Test against England, the visitors can still stage a comeback in this series and that a lot will depend on the toss.
With India sitting pretty at the top of the ICC rankings, Virat Kohli is yet to put a foot wrong as the skipper of the Test side. The Kumble-Kohli partnership is working wonders for the Indian team at the moment and after easily dispatching New Zealand, they have now taken a crucial 1-0 lead in the 5-match Test series against England. However, Ganguly, arguably the best captain India have had in the Test format, is not willing to jump the gun and get carried away by Kohli’s recent record. He feels that much sterner tests lie ahead for the Indian star.
“Kohli has set a very good record for him but he has played a lot of his Tests at home. It helps when you play at home. But credit to him.
“Captaincy is such a thing that gets heavier on you as time goes. The initial days are pretty good. The real test for Virat Kohli as captain will come when India start playing overseas. It has been easy going for him so far.
“Kumble and Kohli haven’t been tested yet. We have got to judge them after a while. It’s still happy days. I will hold my judgment for a while,” Ganguly told India Today.
The former skipper has also warned against complacency after India’s 246-run win in the second Test against England. He has pointed to England’s last visit to India to show how quickly things can turn around in a series.
“Even in 2012, England lost the first Test and came back to win the series but that was a far better English side than this one. You win the toss and you have a huge advantage. There’s a lot of cricket left in this Test series. The toss will be crucial,” he added.
