Harry Kane defended his Bayern Munich move after Michael Owen criticized him for leaving the Premier League. Owen argued Kane sacrificed the chance to be the all-time Premier League top scorer. Kane countered, saying he wanted to play at the highest level, enjoy big Champions League games, and has already lifted the Bundesliga and Supercup.
As the debate around Harry Kane’s decision to leave Tottenham Hotspur for Bayern Munich continues, the England captain has now responded to criticism from former striker Michael Owen. Owen recently claimed Kane was “nuts” to move to Germany, arguing that he should have stayed in the Premier League to chase the all-time goalscoring record instead of leaving his family settled in England. He compared Kane’s switch to Bayern with moving to Celtic, suggesting that winning trophies there carried less meaning.
Kane, however, dismissed those remarks, stressing that every player’s career choices are personal. While respecting Owen’s achievements, he explained that his move was motivated by the desire to compete at the highest level, playing in title races, Champions League matches, and global tournaments like the Club World Cup. Kane added that his focus has been on improving as a player, pushing his limits, and embracing big moments rather than just chasing records.
Ironically, Owen himself had moved to Real Madrid and Manchester United in search of silverware. Kane eventually achieved his long-awaited success last season by lifting the Bundesliga title with Bayern before adding the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, where he scored the opener. The striker emphasized he remains very happy with his decision.
