Gujarat Titans began sedately against the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede on Tuesday after being set a relatively paltry 156 to chase, albeit not on the easiest of tracks. The law of averages finally caught up with Sai Sudharsan as his dream season with the bat ran into just a second failure in the year so far after he nicked off for five to Deepak Chahar, leaving Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler to contend with the shiny new Kookaburra hooping around. The latter was particularly sluggish and cautious to begin with, managing just 14 runs off his first 23 balls when Hardik Pandya brought himself on to bowl in the eighth over hoping to capitalize on his former deputy's hassles. However, the script read otherwise and what followed was a turning of the tables.
Pandya conceded a four off Buttler on just his second ball but the worst came when Gill came on strike a ball later. The MI skipper first faltered with a wide, then managed to eke out a dot only to be called for over-stepping, and made it three extras on the dot with another wide. A small victory followed for the all-rounder when Gill failed to get away an excellent yorker, but the merciless umpires penalized him for over-stepping again to set up a second free-hit on the trot. Under severe durress, Pandya tried to hide away with a wide yorker but missed his length by the slightest bit -- enough for Gill to shuffle across the crease, get down on one knee, and hoist the ball down the ground for a gorgeous maximum.
Gill could not help but laugh at the plethora of opportunities presented to him just when he needed to get going, while disappointment was writ all over Mumbai's bowling coach Lasith Malinga face upon seeing his pupil struggle such. Twitterati, as always, was most concerned with the theatrics.
What a shot!
