Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh by an innings and 78 runs in the second and final Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo on Saturday. Left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya finished with impressive figures of 5/56 to help the hosts skittle out their opponents for 133 in the second innings while spinners Dhananjaya de Silva and Tharindu Rathnayake also chipped in with two wickets.

Earlier Bangladesh could not take advantage of batting first after winning the toss as they could post only 247 on the board with opener Shadman Islam top-scoring for the side with 46. Left-arm spinner Sonal Dinusha and pacer Asitha Fernando finished with 3/22 and 3/51, respectively, for the home team.

Sri Lanka responded with a mammoth 458, a first-innings lead of 211 runs, with Pathum Nissanka’s second consecutive hundred headlining their batting show. Nissanka scored 19 fours during his knock of 158 while Dinesh Chandimal (93) and Kusal Mendis (84) added to Bangladesh's misery with contrasting half-centuries. Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam toiled hard for his 5/131 with off-spinner Nayeem Hasan scalping three wickets for the Tigers.

With more than 200 runs in arrears, Bangladesh’s batting woes continued in the second innings too with no player going past the 50-run mark in both innings. The visitors fell 78 runs short of making Sri Lanka bat again as the hosts’ spinners called the shots on days three and four.
