A Night Watchman is sent to protect a side’s main batter towards the end of the day in Test cricket, but Akash Deep played a special innings during the Oval Test against England. The pacer scored his maiden fifty in Tests to have the entire dressing room on their feet and applaud his effort.

‌Starting the day at 75/2 and with an overall lead of 52 runs, India needed a special effort from someone to extend their advantage on day three of The Oval Test against England. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and night watchman Akash Deep did just that as they frustrated the home side with their valuable partnership.

The pacer made his intentions clear as he slogged left-arm spinner Jacob Bethell over wide mid-on for a boundary in just the third ball of the day. Akash looked equally comfortable against the pacers with boundaries in consecutive overs from Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue.

The pair added 57 runs at a rate of more than four in the first hour of play as the Bengal pacer grew in confidence with his innings. It was evident from his pull shot of Atkinson in the first ball of the second over post the drinks break. He took the pacer to the cleaners again in his next over with two more boundaries.

And finally, the moment arrived as Akash brought up his maiden fifty with a wild heave to the square leg fence in Atkinson’s next. He pumped his fist before letting out a roar and thumping his chest. The Indian dressing room was a happy lot as the players and the support staff rushed to the balcony to hail a special effort.

Captain Shubman Gill was all smiles as he signalled Akash Deep to remove his helmet and celebrate with Ravindra Jadeja, also joining in with the demand. Twitter was in splits as Akash’s memorable knock created a smile on the usually stone-faced Gautam Gambhir’s face.
