RCB vs RR | Twitter in splits as Rana produces Chahalesque pose after juggling routine dispatches Padikkal

The Indian Premier League is often termed the great cricketing circus, a moniker Nitish Rana seemed to have taken too literally at the Chinnaswamy on Thursday. The veteran took as many as six attempts to cling onto a sitter and send Devdutt Padikkal packing after a quick half-century.

‌Royal Challengers Bengaluru rode past a rocky start courtesy Jofra Archer's fiery opening spell to put up a compeititve score against the Rajasthan Royals on the back of half-centuries from Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal. The former scored a resounding 70 off just 42 deliveries but it was his younger comaptriot Devdutt Padikkal that set the pace with a blistering 26-ball half-ton to form a 95-run stand with his former skipper. However, once Kohli departed to Archer in the 16th over, the onus felt on Devdutt to do the heavy lifting but the wily Sandeep Sharma denied him the opportunity -- though not before Devdutt was given multiple glimmers of hope and tortured till the very last second to see whether he survives or has to walk back.

On the first ball of the 17th over, Sandeep cleverly chose the slower on to outfox Devdutt and the trick worked wonders as the batter swung his bat too early and ended up spooning the Kookaburra straight towards the covers. Nitish Rana was waiting to pocket the opportunity, but the force which Devdutt put behind his shot made the veteran expect the white rock to travel a fair distance and was backing away already when the ball approached him. A last second adjustment somehow meant Nitish managed to get two hands on it, only for the ball to pop out and keep dancing around his palms as he tried to take control of it. Ultimately, Nitish went plunging to the ground with the ball popping in an out a hilarious six times, and clung it to his chest to keep it from evading him any further.

Twitterati was all laughs.
