ICC World Cup 2019 | Finger-spin is important but wrist-spinners have more variations, says Yuzvendra Chahal

The modern-day cricket has mostly become a domain of wrist-spinner and four of the six top wicket-takers since the 2015 World Cups are wrist-spinners. Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal were central to India’s domination in the last couple of years and they are expected to hold the reins this time around as well. Chahal stated that he and Kuldeep Yadav are ready to roll before going into explaining why the leggies have become a phenomenon currently.

“He didn’t bowl that badly (in the IPL). As you can see, when it comes to ODI cricket, he’s still bowling as well as he did in his last game. I think we trust each other. We’ve known each other for seven or eight years now. We have a good bond on and off the field. If I bowl first, I talk to him and tell him what the pitch is like and he does the same for me if he bowls first. Before the match, we always plan about bowling googlies or sliders to certain batsmen,” Chahal was quoted as saying by ToI.

“Finger-spin is important for the team, but wrist-spinners have more variations. If you have three, four more variations, it puts more doubt in the batsman’s mind as to which ball is coming next,” pointed out the 28-year-old leggie.

The current World Cup format doesn’t allow any team the lethargy and the team analyst will be the busiest person in the dressing room thanks to the fact that every team will play nine different teams in the World Cup before the semi-final. That will be a challenge for the players as they will have to do their research properly to avoid upsets. Yuzvendra Chahal admitted to the fact but added that other teams will suffer more as they will not have the time to pick Kuldeep Yadav and him.

“The good thing for us is that we’ll be playing different teams. If you’re playing the same team, they tend to read you more easily because they are playing you continuously,” he reasoned.
