VIDEO | Michael Clarke left agitated on air after soft signal overturned without conclusive evidence

Technology and the third umpire are used in cricket to make the on-field umpire’s job easier, but every now and then, even the third umpire is guilty of making silly mistakes. Today, Michael Clarke was left furious on air after the third umpire overturned the soft signal without conclusive evidence.

The way AB de Villiers and Moeen Ali batted in the first innings, RCB fans would have all but sure about their victory at the half-way mark of the innings. But only fools would sign Sunrisers Hyderabad off especially because of the form that they have found themselves in recently. The game was still wide open and RCB had put in all their energy to break the opening partnership between Shikhar Dhawan and Alex Hales.

And that moment came in the third over of the game only when Hales pulled Umesh Yadav flat and Tim Southee dived low to catch it and it seemed like the Kiwi had the fingers under the ball. While RCB started celebrating immediately, the umpire decided to take a review from their side with the soft signal being OUT.

Chettithody Shamsuddin, the third umpire for the match, checked the replay over and over again on slo-mo to understand if the ball had touched the grass. While it was clear in the replay that it was not the case and Southee took it cleanly, the umpire ruled it as NOT OUT, much to the surprise of many, including Michael Clarke, who was doing commentary at the moment.

To overturn the on-field umpire’s signal, the third umpire needed to have a conclusive evidence, which he didn’t have in this case. It was sufficient to agitate the former Aussie skipper, who reckoned that these slow-mo replays create an illusion that the ball is grounded. Virat Kohli and Tim Southee were also not happy with the decision and went on to complain at the umpires, but S Ravi and Anil Dandekar - two on-field officials for the match - asked him to get on with the game.
