Ricky Ponting has, once again, returned to the Indian Player League as the head coach of Delhi Daredevils, Hemant Dua, the CEO of the franchise announced today. Ponting takes over from Rahul Dravid, who stepped down from the position owing to BCCI's conflict-of-interest regulations.

The former Australia skipper was at the helm of affairs of the Mumbai Indians franchise and led the team to their second IPL title in 2015. However, the franchise didn’t renew his two-year contract after 2016. Initially, the 43-year-old had joined the franchise as a player in 2013 but pulled himself out in the mid-way through the tournament due to poor form.

With his second coming in the league, Ponting will replace Dravid, who chose to coach the India A and India Under-19 teams over the IPL franchise. Earlier, reports emerged that Ponting was also in talks to take over as the T20I coach of the Australian cricket team.

One of the finest batsmen to have ever played the game, Ponting played 168 Tests, scoring 13378 runs at an average of 51.85. He also donned the Aussie colours in 375 ODIs matches, scoring 13704 runs at an average of 42.03, as well as 17 T20Is, scoring 401 runs.

Delhi Daredevils retained Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, and Chris Morris ahead of the IPL auctions to be held on January 27-28 in Bengaluru.
