According to an answer to a Right to Information query, it has been revealed that the Mumbai Cricket Association still need to pay a fee of Rs 13.42 crore to Mumbai Police. The police department will get this money for their protection services which they provided during various cricket matches.

Mumbai Cricket Association has been the most powerful state association in India and Wankhede Stadium has become the hub of Indian cricket. Including the Indian Premier League matches of Mumbai Indians, the state association also host domestic tournaments like Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, and various age-group matches.

While Mumbai police have always been supportive of their endeavours and sporting events happened in the city, the association is yet to pay their due to them. RTI activist Anil Galgali had filed his query regarding this and in reply from the Information officer, Mumbai police revealed about the pending amount.

"It is not the first time that MCA has failed to meet the deadline [for payment]. MCA paid Rs 34 crore in installments for protection provided to MCA between 2008-2013. The police had not levied any interest for late payment. This time too it has missed the deadline." said Galgali as quoted by TOI.

The amount of Rs 13.42 crore pending for 62 months and the police department has not charged interest till now. The RTI activist believes that the Mumbai Police showed laziness in recovering the fees for their protection services and advised them to take fees in advance from the MCA.

The next sporting event that Mumbai is going to host is the 11th edition of the IPL as Mumbai Indians will play all their home matches at the Wankhede Stadium. And with the current circumstance, it seems that Mumbai Police will take their money in advance to provide security for the matches.
