Cricket is known to be a game of glorious uncertainty and Hampshire losing 5 wickets for no runs in just the space of just 17 balls shows fans exactly why. Two double wicket maidens from Essex's bowlers triggered a dramatic batting collapse in an English county game between the two.

Hampshire had started their innings well, managing 18 for no loss in four overs, but that's in a dramatic turn of events, they lost 5 wickets in next to no time. The procession was started by Essex's Jamie Porter as he had Liam Dawson caught behind before he cleaned up Hampshire skipper James Vince by knocking over his middle stump.

Things got even worse for the batting side when Matthew Quinn trapped Michael Carberry leg before in the next over and Rilee Rossouw was caught at mid-on next ball. George Bailey was the next man to be dismissed when he was cleaned up by Porter in the next over. Hampshire then soon lost two more wickets in the one Ravi Bopara over to slump to 34/7.  However, a ‘recovery’ of sorts saw them finish the day at 92/7.

Hampshire's head coach Craig White was as bewildered as everyone else about his side’s freefall and cricket.com.au reported him saying, "I thought we bowled well this morning to take eight for a hundred and odd. Then for that to happen I'm just lost for words really.”

"I'm still a little bit gobsmacked, to be honest. There's certainly a little bit in the pitch. It's dried out a bit and done a little bit more than it did yesterday. There were a lot of play-and-misses yesterday, so it was doing a fair bit, and now it's doing enough and it's tricky."
