Tajamul Islam became the first athlete from Kashmir to win a gold medal at the World Kick Boxing Championship held in Italy yesterday. The Indian youngster beat her opponent from the United States to claim gold at the championships after beating four kick boxers in five days.

Tajamul, who hails from Bandipora, was India's representative in Italy where kickboxers from 90 countries participated. She created a little history for herself by becoming a world champion at the age of eight when she claimed the gold in the final.

Master Fasil Ali, who coaches Tajamul and is a kickboxer himself, said that the feat would not have been possible without the help of the Kick Boxing Federation of India

“It was five-day world championship in Italy,” he told KashmirLife.

“Tajamul won gold medal defeating her rival from the United States. She created the history by becoming first such player. She is just an eight-year-old player.”

Tajamul comes from a family of kick-boxers with her brother and two sisters also practicing the sport. Jammu and Kasmir State Education Minister Nayeem Akhtar called the achievement a "proud moment” for the state and the country.
