Ruturaj Gaikwad made up for losing the toss by getting Chennai Super Kings off to a flying start with the bat, scoring six boundaries in the powerplay, albeit the dismissals of Quinton de Kock for a duck and Daryl Mitchell for a tepid 11 restricted the score to 49/2. Ravindra Jadeja promoted up the order once again as a result, failed to bring out the big shots on the day and contributed just 16 runs off 19 deliveries in a 53-run partnership with the skipper before departing in the 12th over. However, the hosts' fortunes turned around drastically once Shivam Dube walked out to bat as he put the opposition to the sword right from the get-go. Lucknow Super Giants, in response, got off to an eerily similar start as their rivals, complete with the first-over wicket of Quinton de Kock followed by KL Rahul's 14-ball struggle for 16 to end the powerplay at 45/2. Nevertheless, Marcus Stoinis ensured the scoreboard kept ticking with frequent boundaries despite being bogged down by Devdutt Padikkal's dot-ball barrage at the other end. The Australian brought up a 26-ball half-century shortly before Matheesha Pathirana's 151ks thunderbolt knocked over Devdutt for a languid 19-ball knock of 13 to end the 55-run stand in the 11th over. With 123 runs needed off the final nine overs, the momentum was firmly in the Yellow Army's favour, until Nicholas Pooran's scintillating cameo of 34 runs in 15 balls brought the equation down to 53 off 21 deliveries. Stoinis eventually brought up his maiden IPL ton off 56 balls followed by three boundaries along with Deepak Hooda in the 19th over to leave 17 to get off the final over. The Australian set the tone with a handsome six and three boundaries to follow and got the job done stunningly.
