Ajinkya Rahane is being benchmarked against his own standards, states Ravichandran Ashwin

India international Ravichandran Ashwin has stood by his teammate Ajinkya Rahane, who missed multiple catches in the off-spinner’s spell, and said that it’s the fielder’s own capacity that’s being used against him. Ashwin went on to take two crucial wickets on Day 1, nevertheless.

After being denied three wickets due to Rahane dropping those catches, Ashwin went on to bag the wickets of Bangladesh skipper Mominul Haque and the seasoned batsman Mahmudullah on the Test-opener day. However, Ashwin is in full backing of the Indian vice-captain who was having an off-day and is brilliant on the field otherwise.

"It can happen. The same ground, last time when Ajinkya was standing at slip, he took so many catches off my bowling. You don't expect Ajinkya to put down catches. We are actually benchmarking him against his own standards, which happens a lot in our part of the world. I expect him to go in the second innings and take a lot of catches," Ashwin stated in the post Day 1 press conference, as quoted by Cricbuzz.

While India bundled up the visitors for a total of 150, India started off in their usual style and were at 86/1 at the end of Day 1. In the first two sessions of Day 2, India continued to stay on stop with Mayank Agarwal’s unbeaten ton and Ajinkya Rahane’s 86.
