ICC world Cup 2019 | it'll be very competitive right from the word go, says Kane Williamson

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson has said that the current edition of the upcoming World Cup in England and Wales will be a competitive one right from the outset. This edition will see every team locking horns with each other and the top four will advance to the semi-finals.

New Zealand pipped India in the warm-up game in London on Saturday and will certainly gain immense momentum with the massive win. New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson would be a happy man after his side beat the favourites by six wickets on a surface that had something for the bowlers.

The current edition of the tournament will see teams crossing swords with each other which last happened in 1992, and the top four teams will advance into the semi-finals. Williamson feels that it’s a competitive edition where no team can afford to take it easy and have to right on the money from the word go.

“Yeah, it'll be a very competitive tournament right from the word go. No team can relax in any match. So it would be wise to try to win as many matches as possible. I think it will be a very interesting tournament this time. We all should remember that one bad day will definitely cost a fortune,” Williamson said in an exclusive interview with TOI.

New Zealand finished as runners-up in the 2015 edition and have done well consistently in World Cups, but are yet to lift the title. However, Williamson is optimistic that this time the fortunes might smile upon the Kiwi side and they could script history.

“Yes, we are aware of the fact. It is not that we did not give our best effort but it just hasn't clicked. We were in the final in the last World Cup in Australia. We did really play well in all the matches but could not win the final. Who knows, fortune might smile on us this time!” Williamson added.
