Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan has been ruled out of the ongoing ICC World Cup 2019 for a period of at least three weeks after suffering a thumb injury off a Nathan Coulter-Nile delivery on Sunday. Dhawan scored a brilliant 117 off 109 deliveries in India's 36-run win against the Australians.

Shikhar Dhawan starred in the recent 36-run win against Australia at the Oval on Sunday. The explosive left-handed opener scored his 17th ODI century on the weekend with a score of 117 off 109 deliveries as India recorded back-to-back victories in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2019 being played in England & Wales.

However, the Indian opener looked to have suffered a painful knock off a Nathan Coulter-Nile delivery in the latter stages of his innings. He played on till he was dismissed but later did not come onto the field for the second innings and was replaced by substitute Ravindra Jadeja.

Recent reports in IndiaToday confirmed that Dhawan will not be available for selection for the next three weeks in order to recover from the thumb fracture. The Delhi opener will therefore not be able to play in India’s upcoming matches against New Zealand, Pakistan, Afghanistan, West Indies and England over the course of the coming month.

Dhawan is a key player for India in ICC tournaments and has a total of six hundreds. In this year’s edition of the World Cup, after a poor start against South Africa, Dhawan smashed 117 to set up a 36-run win for India.
