I did not want a farewell match, says Yuvraj Singh

One of the greatest-ever Indian players of the white ball with nearly 10,000 runs in the limited overs formats, Yuvraj Singh had been the key factor behind some of India’s most historic achievements over the years. 

Be it the match-winning innings of 69 against England in the Natwest series in 2002 that made Sourav Ganguly swirl his jersey in the air, or the six sixes he hit against Stuart Broad that led to India’s triumphant T20 World Cup campaign in 2007, or his man of the series contribution in the 2011 World Cup on home soil, Yuvraj has produced some memorable moments and thus the public felt he was hard done by having to retire without a proper farewell.

“I was told by the BCCI that if you are not able to pass the 'Yo Yo' test, you would get a farewell game,” he said, overwhelmed with emotions in a press conference, reported TOI.

However, he went on to claim that he never was in favour of playing any such match for the team.

“I did not tell anyone in BCCI that I have to play the last match. If I was still good enough and had potential, I would have retired from the ground. I don’t like to ask for a game like that, I have never played cricket with that mindset,” he added.

He also revealed that he would have got the farewell his fans wanted for him had he failed the ‘yo-yo’ test, a fitness test in which the players have to sprint between two cones set 20 metres apart. However, regardless of the test’s result, Yuvraj said he wouldn’t have wanted a farewell game.

“I said at the time that I do not want a farewell game. If I do not pass the yo-yo test, I will just go home quietly. However, I did manage to pass it and the rest is not my call,” the 37-year-old narrated.

He went on to wish the current crop of players best of luck for the ongoing World Cup before stating that he would keep participating in the T20 leagues around the globe provided he got the necessary permission from BCCI to do the same.
