Murali Vijay signs for Somerset County Cricket Club

After the departure of Pakistan's Azhar Ali, Murali Vijay has been picked up by Somerset County Cricket Club to play the remaining three matches in the 2019 English county championship. The veteran Indian Test batsman has previously played in the English championship with - Essex.

Murali Vijay was last called up to the Indian Test team for the series against England last year but failed to impress when given an opportunity with the bat. He was overlooked for the historic series win against Australia that followed in December and looks to be out of consideration for further chances with the national team in the near future.

Having said that, he still seems to be a player in demand back in the UK as he was recently signed by Somerset County Cricket Club for the remainder of the ongoing English Championship.

"I am excited about the challenge of trying to help Somerset push for the County Championship. Somerset have an excellent reputation and I am looking forward to being a part of what they are trying to achieve," Vijay told Cricbuzz after being signed.

Andy Hurry, Somerset CCC Director of Cricket, claimed that Vijay's signing will serve as a major coup for the English club towards the end of challenging season.

"We are delighted to have been able to secure the services of such a high-quality player for the remainder of the County Championship. To have signed a player of his class and ability at this stage of the season is a real coup.

"He has experience of English conditions, having played in the Championship for Essex last year, and that was extremely important to us when it came to selecting a replacement for Azhar," Hurry said in an official statement.
