IPL 2019 | Mike Hesson appointed as Head Coach of King XI Punjab

Michael Hesson had stepped down as head coach of the New Zealand cricket team after a period of almost six years in charge of the Black Caps. Under Hesson’s tutelage, the New Zealand team enjoyed one of the most successful records in the sport of cricket on the international stage. Now the former Kiwi coach will be in charge of the Kings XI Punjab team in Indian Premier League for a period of two years. He will replace former Australian batsman Brad Hodge at the helm of the affairs in the Punjab franchise.

This is the very first assignment of Hesson to coaching a franchise cricket team in the IPL. The team is hoping to provide good results under the teaching of Hesson, in the last season, the team had a stellar start winning five in seven games, but sadly finished with the six in the rest 14 games. He will join Head of Cricket Operations Virendra Sehwag in the team. Kiwi cricketers Daniel Vettori and Stephen Fleming are the two other former players from the country to be a part of other IPL franchises.

Hesson had stepped down as coach of the national team with a year still left on his current contract, in July this year. The 43-year old had cited family issues as one of the primary reasons for his surprise decision and also said the demands of international cricket had influenced his decision and he wants to spend more time with his wife and two daughters.
