In a shocking revelation, Republic have claimed that Doordarshan could be telecasting Indian Premier League games with the Sports Ministry likely to support the long-standing proposal. The Indian government is reportedly eyeing strategies to increase the sport's reach in the country.

The billion-dollar IPL tournament has sold its global broadcasting and digital rights, to Star India, from 2018-2022 for a staggering price of Rs. 16, 347.5 crore in the auction, earlier this year. The media and entertainment company had to pay nearly triple of what Sony, the previous rights holders, had paid back in 2008.

However, to the delight of the masses, the two-and-half-month tournament could now be telecasted on Doordarshan as well, Republic has reported. According to their source, the Information and Broadcasting Industry, who had been trying for the popular tournament to get a good reach across the country, will finally get the support of Sports Ministry to push the proposal.

The big move, which has purportedly been in the making for the past two to three weeks, will surely not sit well with the private channels, who have been earning a fortune by catering to a smaller and well-to-do audience all this time.
